Our 10 year old dog’s energy is up, coat is beautiful, breath has majorly improved, no more gas, and no more paw chewing/itching.

The dog owner’s guide to Portland, Maine

Dog-friendly recs for a weekend getaway in Maine’s largest city.

Picture this: it’s a perfect 75 degrees in the middle of June, and you’re exploring a quaint coastal city with your best four-legged companion. You’re walking the cobblestone streets of the downtown Old Port where nearly every storefront has a “dogs are more than welcome!” sign posted out front. It’s Maine – The Way Life Should Be.

If you haven’t made it up to Portland, Maine for a summer getaway, we highly recommend doing so, and bringing your dog along for the adventure. Below you’ll find our Maev-approved roster of where to go and what to eat and drink on the Portland peninsula with your pet in tow.

Where To Go:

  • Uncommon Paws on Exchange Street is what dog dreams are made of. Filled with the crème de la crème of Maine-made treats, toys, and apparel, this shop is as charming as it is well-stocked. The Fish & Bone is another great stop with an unparalleled bone selection. If you find yourself searching for last-minute walk-in grooming services, head over to Bayside Bark. They make nail trimmings go smoothly for even the most anxious pups (we speak from experience).
  • The Eastern Promenade is a must-see. Between the grassy hillside park, sweeping views of Casco Bay, and East End Beach where your dog can play off leash, it’s arguably the most picturesque part of Portland’s waterfront. Keep your eyes peeled for the Maine Maple Creemee Co. truck which frequents the area, and don’t sleep on the housemade Maple Whiskey Caramel Sauce.
  • While you’re in the East End, hop on the Eastern Promenade Trail – a 4.2 mile hike with beautiful water views that begins at the top of the Eastern Promenade park. It also connects to Bayside and Back Cove Trails if your dog isn’t done exploring just yet.
  • When the clock strikes 7pm, Willard Beach in South Portland is where you and your dog want to be. Though this spot isn’t on the peninsula, it’s a quick 5 minute drive from downtown Portland…and boy is it worth it. Four acres of sand, pebbles, craggly coast, and crisp Maine ocean gives your dog plenty of space to run, play, and swim. You won’t make it out without making friends – neither will your dog.

*Note: from May 1st to September 30th, dogs are prohibited on Willard Beach from 9am to 7pm.

What To Eat:

  • Portland is home to the most craft breweries in America, which makes it difficult to narrow down the best. But Oxbow on Washington Ave is a must. Their open warehouse-style shop and outdoor seating area is the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy a beer with your dog by your side. Order a Surfcasting (or two) and thank us later. Hungry? No problem. Grab some fries from the Duckfat Frites Shack next door, then make your way to The Shop – a few blocks over – for a dozen oysters straight out of Portland’s Casco Bay. Dogs always welcome.
  • Porthole Restaurant & Pub opened its doors in 1929 and hasn’t changed as much as a light bulb since. It's a Portland stalwart, and your dog will love the wharfside deck as much as you love the raw seafood and classic Maine vibe. If lobster rolls and blueberry mimosas aren’t your thing, then Flatbread Company is your place. Order a wood-fired pizza and enjoy the water views while your dog is inducted into their @dogsofflatbread Instagram account.

Local Organizations & Shelters to Support:

If you’re looking to adopt or donate to a pet food pantry program, make sure to stop by the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland. Check for upcoming events on their website, and if possible, plan your trip around their annual Ales for Tails event – a dog-friendly beer festival with dozens of local breweries and food trucks in attendance. All funds raised directly support the nearly 4,000 pets that depend on our life-saving work every year.
